A Quilted Doily for my Haunted Parlor

The doily in the parlor. I have been having a ball with my Slice Die Cutting Machine, and this little project was so much fun.  The Monster Ball design card has some of the cutest little creepy creatures, but I especially fell in love with this hand coming out of some graves.  I thought about what to make out of it, when I was walking through my parlor (also known as the living room) and thought about making a quilted doily.

Getting ready to quilt!

I have a bazillion crocheted doilies, but I wanted this to be different. So I made it like you would any other quilted item, but I cut it in an oval shape and overlock stitched the edges on my sewing machine.  (I’ll post a tutorial on my overlocked quilt bindings later this month)  Then I sewed on some black lace for it to have a real “doily” feel.  If you want to see something else I made with my Slice Machine, check out one of the little Monsters I made a while back.

img030The date is the year my husband and I were married.  Before you think this is the death of us, I’ll mention we were married on Halloween!  It’s the perfect addition to my living room, which is in “haunted mansion” decor year round.  This was a great easy project that I finished in about 2 hours, and it’s great for the upcoming Halloween season!

Chicago Quilt Festival Recap!

I had a fabulous time at the International Quilt Festival in Rosemont (outside of Chicago).  I had one heck of a packed schedule, and I got to meet so many new people and see lots of my good friends.
OpenStudiosHeirloom First off, I had great fun at the Open Studios.  This is where you get to stop by and see what quilt artists are up to and what they are making.  It started last year in Houston, and I loved it, so I was totally game for it again this year.  I showed off three different techniques: Cartooning for Quilters, Heirloom Sewing, and of course, Light Up Your Quilts!  I was asked so many times “Do you teach?”  The answer is YES, YES, YES!
SAMSUNG I also got an opportunity to teach Light Up Artist Trading Cards at Create on the Spot!  This is similar to the old “Make It University” (which is coming back to Houston this year– YAY!).
More Students Create 2 The students in my light up class had a great time, and I had lots of kids in my class!  Everyone’s project lit up!   I thought the class was a great value and I hope everyone liked their project.
Kid Students ATC Class Student ATCS There have been a few places I’ve popped up since, like over on Pokey’s Blog, and on Generation Q’s blog, which is also nice.
Schwerkraft It’s always great to have a quilt in the show, and my quilt “Schwerkraft (Gravity)” was part of the Naperville Modern Quilt Guild’s Log Cabin Modern Quilt Showcase.  It was great fun to see it hanging.
Modern Meet Up There was also a great Modern Meet Up that Catherine and I co-hosted with the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild, and we got to see our friends and have a few drinks to wind down the day.
Light Up OPen StudiosAgain I demoed the Conductive Thread and lights from Superior Threads, who were super great to work with!  They have the best threads.  In all, it was a great weekend.   I can’t wait until Houston!  I already have my flight and hotel!

New Work – Geschwindigkeit

I’m happy to announce that one of my secret projects (Codename BAMF) can now be revealed!  It’s been accepted to the Dinner @ 8 Artists’ Group Show that will be travelling to IQF Long Beach and IQF Houston!

My family loves Mustangs, and I recently joined the ranks with a vintage 1973 Mach 1 of my own.  As a daughter of a car enthusiast, even I knew the “moment” is in turning that key.

Geschwindigkeit means Speed in German, and though I named it for the car and how much I love to drive it and to go fast, it also means the hectic pace which drove me to finish it, and the frenetic velocity at which my life is going by.  A running joke is that the car is my “mid-life crisis car, now I just need the crisis”.  While I don’t anticipate having a crisis at 40, my life is very full, and I have many positives that I need to remind myself of, especially when I turn the key and start that beast of an engine.
